Lesson 2 (11-Sep,08) Part 2

Color scheme formula

1. Monochromatic Relationship Colors that are shade or tint variations of the same hue.

2. Analogous Relationship Those colors located adjacent to each other on a color wheel.

3. Complementary Relationship Those colors opposite from each other on a color wheel.

4. Split-Complementary Relationship One hue plus two others equally spaced from its complement.

5. Double-Complementary Relationship / Diad Two complementary color sets; the distance between selected complementary pairs will effect the overall contrast of the final composition.

6. Triad Relationship Three hues equally positioned on a color wheel.

7. Anachromatic Retionship Colorless e.g. Black, Grey, White

Color Thoery Basics

VALUE - is a measure of where particular color lies along the lightless-darkness axis. (from black , value 0 at the bottom, to white , value 10 at the top)

CHROMA - measured radially from the center of each slice, represents the 'purify' of a color, with lower chroma being less pure (more washed out as in pastels)

Hue - Munsell defined hue as " the quality by which we distinguish one color from another. "

- Five principle colors : Red, Yellow, Green, Blue, and Purple.

- Five intermediate colors : Yellow-Red, Green-Yellow, Blue-Green, Purple-Blue, and Red-Purple.

- In a wheel measured off in 100 compass points.

3 Axes - Hue at radical circle / Value in vertical-axis / Chroma at horizontal aspects.

The Color Space

Munsell's Color System - showing a circle of hues at value 5 chroma 6 ; the neutral values from 0 to 10 ; and the chromas of purple-blue (5PB) at value 5.

Lesson 1 (3-Sep,08)

Brief Introduction of color

Hue - Color & Hue are synonyms that are often used interchangeably. Hue is attribute by which one color is distinguished from another. The color in its purest form, with no black, grey, or white added (without tint / shade). A hue is an element of the color wheel.

Neutral - Black, white, and gray lack hue are considered neutrals.

Value / Luminance - is the lightest or darkness of a surface color. A measure of the amount of light reflected from a hue. Those hues with a high content of white have a higher luminance or value.

Saturation / Purity - is essentially the amount of pigment in a color & is defined as the strength or vividness of a hue. The degree of purity of a hue. The amount of hue in proportion to the neutral gray of the same lightness, that is the intensity of color.

Shade - occurs when a pure color is mixed with gray or black.

Tint - occurs when a pure color is mixed with white.
